Methodology & Data Sources
How we collect, verify, and present crisis data
Data Collection
HormuzTracker.tech aggregates data from multiple maritime intelligence sources to provide a comprehensive, real-time view of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Our data pipeline consists of a dedicated Cloudflare Worker that scrapes and merges data from established maritime monitoring services, caching results in Cloudflare KV for fast access. The system refreshes data every 5 minutes via a scheduled cron trigger.
Our primary data sources include AISstream.io for real-time vessel position data, oilpriceapi.com for commodity price feeds, and the aggregated crisis monitoring data from established Hormuz monitoring services. Carrier status, P&I club information, and vessel seizure data are compiled from official carrier announcements, insurance market reports, and verified news sources. Diplomatic timeline events are curated from multiple international news agencies and government statements.
Data Sources Table
| Data Type | Source | Update Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel Positions | AISstream.io + aggregated | 5 minutes |
| Oil Prices | oilpriceapi.com + aggregated | 5 minutes |
| Carrier Status | Official carrier announcements | Daily |
| Insurance Data | P&I club reports | As announced |
| Vessel Seizures | Verified news + naval reports | As events occur |
| Diplomatic Timeline | Government statements + news | As events occur |
Crisis Severity Scoring
The crisis severity score (1-10) is a composite metric that takes into account: strait status (closed/restricted/open), percentage of normal traffic flow, oil price deviation from pre-crisis levels, insurance premium escalation, and the number of vessel seizures. A score of 10/10, as currently assigned, indicates maximum disruption across all measured dimensions: the strait is fully closed to commercial traffic, oil prices have increased more than 50% from pre-crisis levels, insurance premiums are 20x normal, and military seizures are ongoing.
Known Limitations
- AIS vessel counts represent a lower bound, as ships in the affected zone may switch off transponders or experience signal interference.
- Oil prices may lag real-time market by up to 5 minutes depending on API availability.
- Carrier status reflects official announcements; actual operational decisions may differ.
- Economic impact estimates are based on modeling and may differ from actual outcomes.
- Historical comparison data is simplified for presentation purposes.
